Born to Slow Horses

About the Broadside

Center for Book Arts artist Claudia Cortinez designed and produced this broadside for the poem Born to Slow Horses by historic deceased poet Kamau Brathwaite on the occasion of CBA’s Fall 2021 Broadside Reading: Black Spirits.

The inclusion of historic deceased poets in the Black Spirits program was a historic first in the 20+ years of CBA’s Broadside Reading Series, which previously had only featured contemporary living poets. In addition to Cortinez’s broadside for Brathwaite, CBA artists Yusuf Hassan and Alix Pentecost-Farren designed and produced broadsides for historic deceased poets Amiri Baraka and Ai, respectively, for the Black Spirits program.
