Masters of the Craft

works by instructors of book arts

Brian Hannon said of the exhibition: “‘Masters of the Craft’ contains the work of printers, bookbinders, and papermakers who are all instructors of the book arts, as well as artists in their own right. While some are obviously exploring new forms which defy our expectations about books, even those who utilize traditional book formats are creating bookworks that reflect contemporary aesthetic concerns and ultimately challenge the boundaries as well. This exhibition serves as a survey of the diversity of contemporary limited edition and artist’s books. All the books possess some elements of traditional bookbinding, either in the use of materials, the method of production, or a systematic presentation of text and image. Each is a tangible work that communicates an idea by combining the structure, design, content, and materials into one cohesive form which tells us more about ourselves and our culture.”

Support for the Center for Book Arts’ visual arts programming is provided, in part, by the New York State Council on the Arts, with the support of Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, and by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.

This motif evokes a scene described in “Ballad of the Hanged Man,” a poem included among this edition’s selection. The raven’s wings were designed as flames in order to symbolize the intolerance of the age. Destruction by fire was frequently the fate of heretics and the heretical books they authored.
